Understanding Overtime Pay
Overtime pay compensates employees for hours worked beyond the standard workweek. Under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay at a rate of at least 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.
Common Overtime Rates
- Time and a Half (1.5x): Most common, required by FLSA for hours over 40/week
- Double Time (2x): Often used for holidays, weekends, or excessive overtime
- Premium Pay: Some employers offer higher multipliers for specific situations
Who Qualifies for Overtime?
Most hourly workers are entitled to overtime pay. However, certain employees are exempt, including some salaried workers, executives, professionals, and administrative employees earning above certain salary thresholds. Check with your HR department or the Department of Labor for specific rules.
